On the tarmac of memory lane, the cycling world stands still today, pausing to honor the Swiss cycling legend, Gino Mäder who would have turned 27. He left a deep mark through his unwavering commitment that continues to reverberate through the hearts of his fans and riders.

Even after six months after his demise at the Tour de Suisse, his spirit continues to live in the world of professional cycling. His mother, Sandra Mäder, shared a heartwarming memory on her social media to tenderly commemorate her son.

The mother shared a photo of Mäder, alongside a heartfelt message that read, “Happy Birthday Gino. I hope you celebrate your birthday in heaven with a big one and laugh at how incompetent I was when it came to baking birthday cakes. Miss you so much. In eternal love. Mum”. Through this, she expressed both her longing and love on a special day that, in turn, conveyed a bittersweetness of celebrating the birthday of her beloved son.

However, his success was short-lived. On June 16, 2023, he suffered from a fatal crash during the Tour de Suisse that claimed his life. Labeled as the most challenging multi-stage road race, the “queen stage” tests the physical resilience and strategic strength of the strongest riders. At that stage, the Bahrain Victorious rider crashed into a ravine and lost his life.

Mäder’s legacy beyond the cycling track

Even though every effort was made to make Mäder survive, he was airlifted and transported to a hospital in Chur, all efforts to revive him turned futile. The reason behind his death was reported as a high-speed crash. Following his death, the race track was put under investigation to scrutinize the dangerous descent route.

Noting the amounts of messages that poured in from fans and fellow cyclists, even six months after his death, expounds the impact Mäder had left on the sport and beyond. The Swiss cyclist has been remembered mainly for his exceptional performances in two races, the Giro d’Italia and Tour de Romandie.

But more significantly, his legacy extended beyond his victories on the racing track. Mäder committed himself to social causes during the 2022 Vuelta a España. The cyclist took up the responsibility of raising funds for Just Diggit, the African re-greening charity. His dedication had left an impact beyond the confines of the sport that encouraged his family to set up a charity foundation, ‘Ride for Gino’.
