A hobby pursued during the lockdown restrictions brought by COVID-19 bore effective results. The 16-year-old resident from Dumfries in Virginia, Kayla Dinnin, took up cycling as a recreation following the closure of the swimming club of the town.

Although initially, Dinnin was reluctant about the sport, gradually she got drawn into cycling. With the aim of maintaining her fitness during the lockdown, she took up cycling to stay active. In her transition, the Dumfries Cycling Club played a major role in supporting her. It provided her with access to resources that catalyzed Dinnin’s evolution as a cyclist.
Her journey in competitive cycling commenced in 2021 and she swiftly climbed the ladder to the top by grabbing the league titles in the first year itself. Besides, Dinnin triumphed with flying colors by winning a hill-climb championship. Hill-climb championship is undoubtedly strenuous for any new rider. She also succeeded in 10-mile time trials.
As Dinnin shared her views with Daily Record, her voice exuded enthusiasm, “Next year I will be a junior so I will be training really hard as the races are a lot tougher. They are more on the road and less on the circuit.”

Dinnin’s dedication towards the sport has led her to secure one of the notable accomplishments exhibiting her prowess while competing in the British National series that took place in Fife. Despite being an apprentice in the field of cycling, she succeeded in securing the overall 14th position, exemplifying her exceptional skills.
Her selection in the Scotland under-16s team in the category of regional road championship marks a dominant milestone in her cycling journey. Dinnin continued to exhibit her mastery, which led her to win the title in the youth A category under the Scottish Crit Championship.
Besides excelling in sports, Dinnin is a sincere student at Lockerbie Academy. She manages her academics in between her rigorous training sessions. Her ability to strike a balance between cycling and studies shows how she is an exceptional human being aiming to flourish in every aspect of life.
