Scottish Cyclist’s Cross-Continental Quest Ends Mysteriously in Italy After Mushroom Poisoning in France

38-year-old Scottish cyclist Steven Harper has met a gruesome end after going missing for months. Harper was an avid outdoorsman and loved cycling very much. To satiate his passion for cycling, he embarked on a journey from Dundee, Scotland to India via the Mediterranean route. Unfortunately, after being robbed in France and supposedly ingesting a deadly mushroom, he has been confirmed dead recently. According to the news, the cyclist met his demise in Italy, after falling from a cliff. 

While the news put an end to all the mystery surrounding Harper’s disappearance, it also made the cyclist’s family sink deep in desperation. So how exactly did Steven Harper die? Let us dig deep into the story and look at all the minute details below. 

Cyclist meets a sad end after failed cycling adventure

As per the news from BBC, the Scottish cyclist was near Ventimiglia, Italy, from where he fell off the cliff. While he was falling down, construction workers working at a nearby site witnessed the visuals live. As soon as they pictured Harper falling down, they did not waste any time and rushed to the spot. While they tried to attend his emergency, a helicopter was sent to airlift him to a nearby hospital. 

The doctors and the medical team at the hospital tried their best to revive the 38-year-old. Unfortunately, the efforts seemed to go in vain as Harper succumbed to his demise. Soon after the reports came out, Dale, the deceased cyclist’s brother, accused the officers of concealing information. Dale stated that the news of his brother’s death was not conveyed to him until late December. It has been reported that the last remains of Steven were preserved in a morgue in Italy. 

Dale later issued an official statement confirming the loss of his brother. He said, “His death was attributed to a fall from a cliff, possibly due to disorientation caused by mushroom toxins… I am proud of him, but I am just so broken knowing he’s not there anymore.” He further reflected on the matter, saying that his brother passed away following his passion and that was a slim silver lining of comfort amidst the otherwise grim incident. 

As soon as the news of Steven’s demise broke, his family received significant sympathy from everyone.

Dale informed that condolence and sympathy messages have not stopped coming in since the news came to light. Friends, neighbors, and family, everyone took turns to fathom the shocking outcome that awaited Steven. He also added that at the moment, all his family members were devastated and were reeling from the shock.

Speaking about his brother’s personality, Dale said that Steven was a carefree person. He stressed on his brother’s free-spirited nature that made him loved by everyone he had acquaintances with. Steven also believed and followed the motto, ‘You can do what you set your mind to.’
