Pedaling into the world of cycling, Red Bull entered into the heart of the sport unleashing its high-energy fervor. The Austrian energy drink label made a groundbreaking acquisition by controlling stakes in Bora-Hansgrohe’s parent company.  

This leap has spun the wheel of the cycling sport towards innovation and collaboration, blending the titan of energy with athleticism. Besides joining the cycling peloton, Red Bull might just redefine the pace of the pedalling world. 

Red Bull’s strategic expansion in cycling

The company has acquired the controlling stake in RD pro cycling GmbH & Co KG and RD Beteiligungs GmbH which oversees the Bora-Hansgrohe WorldTour team. As per the recent developments in the cycling arena, this instance marks a pivotal moment in the commercial landscape of the sport.

Based on the reports, amidst the approval of Austria’s Federal Competition Authority, Red Bull GmbH’s indirect acquisition included a 51% stake in Bora Hansgrohe’s parent company. This accounted as a strategic maneuver, since until now, the brand restricted itself to sponsoring individual cyclists including Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock. 

Bora Hansgrohe has recently been exposed to achieving a series of milestones including the signing of the coveted Primoz Roglic and the achievement of the Giro d’Italia. As they soared into success, Red Bull stepped in to invigorate the prospects of the team.  

Resurgence by redefining partnerships

About the collaboration with Red Bull, the team shared its views releasing a statement, “Red Bull is planning to expand its involvement in road cycling and is aiming for a partnership with Bora-Hansgrohe. By becoming a partner in Team Manager Ralph Denk’s operating company, Red Bull strives to complement the team’s portfolio of existing long-term main sponsors, who will remain on a long-term basis. The planned joint venture has been notified to the relevant antitrust authority,”  However, speculations loom over the change in the sponsorship whether the jersey of the cyclists would contain the Red Bull logo or not.

This has not been the first time that Red Bull stepped into sports ownership. Previously, it sponsored soccer clubs including RB Leipzig and FC Red Bull Salzburg as well as Formula 1 teams. Having a stronghold across various sports disciplines, the brand fuels the ambitions of the athletes by elevating their sports standards.

The path in professional cycling has not been smooth for Red Bull since they recently lost the broadcast rights to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in 2023. Hence, this renewed partnership with Bora-Hansgrohe gives them a chance and rejuvenates their within the cycling sphere.
