Caleb Ewan is a renowned name in the cycling realm. However, recently, things haven’t been going great for him. The cycling community was shocked with the news of Ewan exiting from his team, Lotto Dstny. After a fair bit of speculation doing the rounds regarding the possible cause of exit, the 29-year-old himself decided to lift the lid on the issue. He cited the degrading relationship with the team’s new general manager, Stephane Heulot to be the primary cause for his exit.

What was more surprising was the fact that the Australian cyclist stated that he had previously warned about Heulot even before he took over the reins. So, what exactly happened between the two? Let us take a closer look at the entire situation and find the answers for ourselves.

Stephane Heulot took over as the general manager of Lotto Dstny from John Lelangue in the year 2018. Heulot and Ewan’s feud started when Ewan mentioned that he had never heard of Heulot in his life. Speaking about his differences of opinions with Heulot, Ewan said that he was not permitted to participate in tough races. This meant that Ewan’s Tour De France preparations were significantly hampered due to a lack of quality practice.

Citing as an example, Ewan stated that he was made to participate in the Belgium tour and Tour de Hongrie. These were small-scale one-day races that did not serve the purpose of forging Ewan’s skills for Paris. On the flip side, the Australian wanted to attend the Criterium Du Dauphine, which, allegedly, Heulot denied. Ewan also reflected on the stressful situation that he was under while being a part of the squad.

Speaking on the subject, Ewan stated, “And then from the team as well, they’re like ‘hey, why aren’t you performing?’ I know that there were comments in the team, like, ‘he doesn’t win for how much he gets paid’… And that’s annoying because obviously I’m trying to win. I want to win more than they want me to win.”

However, it is not only Caleb Ewan that has spoken about Heulot. The new general manager of the team, too, did not have a very high opinion of Ewan.

Heulot also stated, “I can’t do anything, it’s up to him to sort it out, I don’t know how to handle this kind of character, I’ve never seen that… He asks for a lot from his team, it’s a lot for him, always for him,” while speaking about Ewan.
