Keegan Swenson won the 131- Mile Race and the elite men’s title. Although the race was not easy, Swenson showed real tactical brilliance. It’s difficult to keep the pace going for the full 131-Mile race. The rider needs to be smart and choose his moments. Swenson finished his race in just 24 seconds over the six – hour mark.

– “It was a real tactical race,” Swenson said while speaking to Star Herald. “That back loop we did had a lot of loose, sandy, silky roads, and there also was a lot of wind — crosswind, tailwind, headwind. It made for a constantly changing dynamic of the race. You really had to pay attention to where your tires were to make sure you didn’t sink into any loose sand and crash or have any issues. There was 50 miles (of the course) that were pretty stressful I thought.”

On the other hand, Stephens of Dallas, Texas, completed her 131- mile race in just over 6 hours. She finished her U. S Cycling Gravel Race three minutes ahead of Alexis Skarda, who came second. Stephens came into the race with a lot of confidence. After winning the race in the Garmin Gravel Worlds on August 26, the confidence carried over to this one. Although, this race was 131-mile long, winning gave her the confidence.

“It was a pretty good prep,” she said while speaking to Star Herald. “Winning Gravel Worlds gave me the confidence that I could ride strong over the 131-mile course. We hit the first minimal maintenance road around 50 kilometers. I pretty much got away (from the pack) with a bunch of mountain bikers.

Races like the U.S Cycling Gravel Races are a true test of mental toughness. The endurance needed to cover 131- miles takes a toll on the body. Although endurance is important, planning the race is also important. Both the athletes showed tremendous endurance levels and toughness. Hopefully, both can win many such medals in the future.
