The Cyclo-cross World Cup in Gavere witnessed a moment that transcended the race itself, involving two participants. One being the Costa Rican rider Felipe Nystrom and the other being the five-time World Championship title owner, Mathieu van der Poel. He collided with Nystrom during the cycling event, which has left the former to receive a lot of hate, and exposed him to controversy. However, during the aftermath, the Costa Rican resonated with regret, taking accountability for the incident that transpired between them. 

Unfortunate moment unfolds at Cyclocross

Felipe Nystrom had previously shared his journey so far overcoming challenges of child abuse, depression, homelessness and finally earning his spot in the prestigious realm of cycling. Being part of Cyclocross, he soon soared to success and encouraged other Costa Ricans to take part. It was on December 27 that he found himself in a contentious position. An incident unfolded on lap three as Felipe Nystrom stopped to click a selfie with a fan. Unaware of Van der Poel, he inadvertently obstructed his path. This move further prompted the cycling champion to nudge Nystrom in an attempt to maintain his balance and save himself from a crash.

Being overwhelmed by the incident and being deeply remorseful, Nystrom had openly admitted his fault. The Costa Rican cyclist expressed his profound regret and a sense of unworthiness continued tormenting him emotionally, as he shared his belief, “I feel terrible. It was 1,000% my fault what happened there”, as compiled by GCN. Even though since childhood he had fought every battle in his life, this moment of misjudgment weighed heavily on his conscience.

The video from the controversial moment in Cyclocross has been circulated and has sparked diverse opinions among cycling fans. A section of the cycling enthusiasts criticized Felipe Nystrom while others defended his action, citing Van der Poel’s alleged aggressiveness. However, Nystrom himself wished to convey his heartfelt apologies to the champion,  “I am concerned that Mathieu may receive hate messages. It’s horrible that he would experience a negative impact from a situation I put him in. I wish that I could look Mathieu in the eye and say how sorry I am.”

In a heartening turn, it was Van der Poel who responded with compassion and understanding. The World Championship title holder acknowledged Felipe Nystrom’s story and the error of judgment during the race. He extended his forgiveness and urged the Costa Rican cyclist not to give up on his cycling aspirations based on this single incident.
