Throughout his remarkable life, Billy left an indelible mark on the town’s sporting scene. He passed away after battling with an illness, from natural causes.

A Sporting Enthusiast from the Start

Billy Cashin’s journey through life was marked by his unwavering passion for sports. As a young boy, he embraced the outdoors. Whether it was hunting for rabbits, fishing in the Barrow, playing handball on William Street’s gable wall, or engaging in pigeon racing alongside his friend Francis Kelly, he did it all. He worked as a messenger boy in Gorry’s chemist and assisted his brother Ger on the milk van. He earned his keep while fostering a deep connection to his community.

Billy’s commitment to sports extended to his education, where he attended CBS NS and secondary school. He even took on the role of a telegram boy at the New Ross post office, a position that included making tea for Ms. Kearns. Later, he became a postman in Waterford City and secured his own delivery route in Arthurstown, forging many enduring friendships along the way. However, as times changed and routes were restructured, Billy decided to retire from his postal duties.

Not only was Billy known for his dedication to his family and community, but he was also a true sports enthusiast who excelled in various disciplines. He embraced the world of athletics as a long-distance runner with the United Striders. He trained under the watchful eye of Mel Hynen and also trekked the hills of Creacon and Kelly’s Wood. Running in the rain was a particular joy for him. From quirky town runs with a pint in hand to complete the Dublin City marathon in an impressive 2 hours, 56 minutes, and 56 seconds, Billy’s commitment to running was unwavering, even after receiving two prosthetic knees.

Billy’s sporting prowess extended beyond running; he ventured into GAA, basketball, soccer with Ross Celtic and Park Rangers, cycling with the Barrow Wheelers, rugby with New Ross Rugby Club, and golf as a member of New Ross Golf Club. While he admitted that he hadn’t mastered any of these sports, he certainly reveled in the joy they brought him.

Billy Cashin was more than just a sports enthusiast; he was a caring and compassionate individual who touched the lives of many. Despite his jovial exterior, he had a sensitive soul and a sincere, friendly smile for everyone he encountered. His love for birds, photography, and the great outdoors showcased his multifaceted personality. He overcame his severe claustrophobia to embark on adventures abroad and build lifelong friendships with bar owners and entertainers.

Not only did Billy excel in sports, but he also excelled in life by being a devoted husband to Breda, a loving father to Gail and Gillian, and a doting grandfather to Rose, Olivia, and April. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the New Ross community.
