In an unfortunate twist of fate, Jay Petervary’s relentless pursuit of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route FKT was abruptly halted by a collision with a vehicle. Jay’s wife Tracey disclosed this through a social media post.

It occurred after he had completed two-thirds of the 3,000-mile route. The accident took place in the vicinity of Salida, Colorado, interrupting his arduous journey.

Injury Details Emerge: A Display of Resilience and Determination

In the aftermath, Tracey Petervary’s update reassured well-wishers about Jay’s condition – alive, albeit with several injuries. She emphasized that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

A family friend was promptly by his side as he received medical attention. A subsequent update detailed the extent of his injuries. A burst fracture of the L2 vertebra, and fractures in the left forearm and right humerus. Apart from that, he also had abrasions on his buttocks, hip, and elbow. He also had a cut cornea, but thankfully, it did not affect his vision.

Jay Petervary’s tenacity and resolve were evident as he braced for the journey ahead. He was scheduled to undergo arm surgery on August 29, and medical professionals would conduct a spinal review during his hospital stay, which was anticipated to last 2 to 3 days. The projected recovery timeline included wearing a back brace for 4 to 6 weeks. Despite the challenges posed by his injuries, his unwavering spirit shone through, a testament to his endurance both on and off the bike.

Pursuit of FKT and Charitable Endeavors: Petervary’s Remarkable Journey

The collision occurred as Petervary was on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone: setting the FKT on the Adventure Cycling Association’s Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. The route spans an impressive 3,000 miles, stretching from Jasper, Alberta, to Antelope Wells, Canada. At the time of the collision, he was on the fourteenth day of his attempt and was on pace to surpass the current record. The unfortunate incident struck when he had less than 1,000 miles left to complete.

In addition to his pursuit of the FKT, Petervary was also dedicated to a charitable cause. His ride aimed to raise funds for bikepacking scholarships through the Be Good Foundation. With this endeavor marking his eighth ride along the GDMBR, Petervary’s commitment to pushing boundaries was evident. His previous victory in the 2021 Tour Divide further underscored his prowess in endurance racing.
