Maciej Bodnar, renowned for his unwavering zest throughout a decades-long career on the saddle, announced his farewell to the sport at 38. Admirably, his course in professional games now exhibited a legacy of countless victories. 

With the end of a remarkable 26-year journey in cycling tournaments, Bodnar had left an indelible mark on racing tracks throughout his illustrious career. Carving his path as a steadfast support rider, the Polish rider also seized triple-time glory in World Championships. However, it was his alliance with another athlete that ultimately defined much of his journey.

After joining forces with Team Liquigas in 2007, Bodnar swiftly became an integral part of the pro cycling realm. But the peak of his cycling dominance arrived hand-in-hand with Peter Sagan. As they navigated diverse arenas together, while facing every triumph and challenge in unison, the athletic duo had seemingly crafted an unbreakable bond, both on and off the tracks.

 

Evidently, this cycling brotherhood extended beyond the three-time world champion’s initial year of WorldTour in 2010, highlighting their joint farewell to Team TotalEnergies. As the curtains drew a climax to his racing career, Bodnar reminisced on the cherished 14-year saga he enjoyed alongside Sagan’s, halting his on-track presence forever with an Instagram post.

Undeniably, the cycling icon’s decision to retire from professional matches did not come as something easy. Expressing his candid feelings, Bodnar shared the inner conflict that athletes often encounter, mentioning the perpetual efforts required to land significant achievements.

Subsequently, he also claimed having a constant desire to prove himself, but now, all focus would finally be on just his family. Expressing immense pride in his role as a ‘gregario’, Bodnar also celebrated the victories of other cycling luminaries he supported in the goodbye note.

From Michal Kwiatkowski’s triumph as a world champion to Rafał Majka’s bronze at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he stood as an unsung hero in multiple victories. As he remembered these fruitful memories, the former cyclist stated, “It was an unforgettable experience!”, adding, “I don’t regret one single moment, we really enjoyed it!”

With a heavy heart, Bodnar announced the end of his cycling performances on Tuesday, sharing some photographic stances via social media. He captioned it with the declaration, notifying that his latest season was a conclusive one. In an emotional ode, the former cyclist extended heartfelt gratitude to the entire sports fraternity, from teammates to support staff members.
