“Guilty For Everything” – Belgian Race Organizer Faces Three-Month Suspension After Fatal Route Mishap Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Cyclist

With tumultuous courses in legalities, the Belgian cycling community witnessed a stinging hearing from the Tournai police court. After a misplaced racing track claimed the life of 19-year-old rider Stef Loos, the scene sparked calamities on March 17, 2019. While its dire consequences entangled the event’s organizer, Marc Duquesnoy, this latest update marked his prolonged suspension from the sport. 

In the heart of Wallonia, this deadly cycling mishap was recorded during the Grand Prix Alfred Gadenne. As the participating riders were mistakenly directed off course, this reckless move sadly resulted in an ill-fated collision involving Loos and a van driver. And now, after a lengthy scrutiny, race organizer Duquesnoy found himself engulfed by severe charges alongside the penalty of his three-month suspension. 

Cycling accident triggers consequences beyond fatalities 

Reportedly, the fateful cycling event saw 30 riders joining its course, including young talent Stef Loos. Misguided by the accused marshal, they were spotted hurtling down Chaussée de Frasnes with high-paced trajectories when it all went south at an unsecured crossroads.

As a van collided with the cyclists, the scene ended in fatal consequences for the teen cyclist. With the court revealing critical deficiencies in their vivid evaluation of this cycling tragedy, the officials mentioned a shortage of marshal motorcyclists. By pointing at the imprecise signs and absent signals at several crucial intersections, the authorities shared their firm takes against the alleged race organizer. Prosecuted for his involvement in this cycling demise, Duquesnoy was handed a months-long suspension notice. 

In a candid take, the accused organizer backed his act, stating, “I have organised more than 500 races,” as he further claimed, “What happened remains on my heart. But I cannot be responsible and guilty for everything.”

Perilous mistake lands severe repercussions in legalities 

Additionally, Duquesnoy also faced legal charges under some parameters. Focusing on the injuries that stemmed from his series of errors in planning an amateur race, the official statement marked an abrupt halt to his cycling management career.

Despite a prosecutor’s initial request for his 12-month sentence with six months of suspension, the court seemingly opted for a more lenient punishment. 

With the defense arguing that he was not responsible for the marshal deployment, they also highlighted the police’s approval for the cycling race. The investigation underscored many other flaws in planning.
