The Velodromo Parque Penalolen 2023 was one of the tournaments that the Canadian men?s pursuit team was eyeing. They knew that winning this tournament would send a strong message to the entire cycling community about their dominance. And did they dominate the tourney? The third day of the track cycling event saw the Canadian men?s team come out on top in the finals. This handed them a well-deserved gold, just a day after setting a new Pan-American World Record.?

The victorious team included the services of accomplished cyclists. These included Sean Richardson, Carson Mattern, Chris Ernst, and Michael Foley, who is well known for his Olympic appearances. A chunk of the team?s almost flawless performance was attributed to their average age, which was only 22.25. While the highest age was 24 for both Ernst and Foley, Mattern was just 19, followed by the 22-year-old Richardson.?

After clinching double gold in the tournament, the members were quite rightly overjoyed. Echoing the sentiment, Mattern stated, ?It?s been an overwhelmingly positive experience for me. I?ve been to a few World Championships and other events and the vibe is unmatched here. Just being around all the best athletes from our country as well as others uplifts us to do the best and represent Canada the best we can. It?s a really tight-knit squad, we all have each other?s backs? I know I have a job to do, everyone else does their job, we take care of each other and win medals.? Mattern had prior accomplishments as well, winning the Junior World Championships in both individual pursuit and Omnium.?
