While the region’s vibrant bicycle ethos and ambitious infrastructure have evolved as the forefront of urban movements, its latest accolade signaled something larger. 

Glorifying its riding-centric landscape, the city has played a significant role in reverberating mobility stances for decades. Home to the acclaimed British Cycling Manchester Velodrome, Manchester stands as a beacon for bicycle enthusiasts globally. And now, with this eminent title, its tranquil experiences have voiced golden hopes for saddleback rides.

Boasting new cycling routes that are thriving under the Bee Network initiative, the region’s statistics proudly flaunt an elevated riding passion. With a staggering 7,000 cyclists utilizing the Oxford Road bicycle lanes, the record saw an unprecedented rise in October.

Coupled with an ambitious 2040 transport strategy, the city’s management is now aiming for 90% of all commutes to become eco-friendly. With plans for a carbon-neutral Manchester by 2038, the cycling capital’s renaissance mirrored a city committed to fostering energetic riding cultures. 

As events like the Tour of Britain’s Grand Départ and a burgeoning ‘medal factory,’ left their mark on its land, the area kept fostering a ripe environment for cyclists. Expressing fervent enthusiasm at the European title, the President and Founder of ACES Europe shared his candid stance. 

Multiple localities supporting the sport 

“Manchester has demonstrated a sporting DNA with cycling as a pivotal policy”, Gian F. Lupattelli stated, adding, “We hope it sets a great example for future candidates competing for the award.” While Manchester clinched the first title, many other cities across Europe have also showcased epic cycling prowess.

Evidently, Utrecht in the Netherlands surged to the helm as the world’s most bike-friendly city, with a staggering 51% of its populace embracing cycling. Another notable city favoring the sport is Belgium’s Antwerp region, lauded for its affordability in acquiring bikes and sharing around 4000 robust routes. 

The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, has also been remarkable for bicycle enthusiasts. Other noteworthy cities are Copenhagen, Hangzhou, Bern, and Hannover among several more regions, all popular for their enriched cycling landscapes.
