A few months back the UCI World Cycling Championships were injected with an unexpected dose of drama when a group of climate activists created roadblocks resulting in the event coming to a halt. In the recent developments, the activists have been convicted by the law of justice. 

The trial has unfolded in the court resulting in them defending their actions. In the face of dire circumstances, they prevail to remain committed to their cause to tackle the ongoing climate crisis.   

Legal proceedings unfold following the interrupted cycling event by climate activists

Belonging to the climate change action group ‘This is Rigged’, the protesters including Catriona Roberts, Ben Taylor, Romane Moulin, and Rebecca Kerr took part in the protest. The group posted on the official Twitter handle on August 6 stating the protest that took place during the prestigious cycling event. 

Armed with powder cannons, chaining themselves together, the activists took action to obstruct the race leading to the temporary suspension. Police witnesses have provided accounts of the protest that took place during the men’s elite race. One of them, PC McKinnon shared insights about the activists with The Herald stating, The way they were dressed, they looked a bit dishevelled. Almost like they had been sleeping rough.”

On November 8, Wednesday, a day-long trial took place at Falkirk Sheriff Court convicting Roberts, Taylor, and Moulin who represented themselves at the court without the assistance of any solicitor.

A continuing commitment of the climate activists

The activists along with their legal representatives presented their statement in front of the court. In the defense of her actions, Roberts put forward her views stating, “If your house is on fire and you scream in the street, stop the traffic and become rooted in fear, would you be arrested for breach of the peace? No, of course not. Well, our home is on fire, and just because you may be privileged enough to not feel it yet, does not mean we shouldn’t be screaming in the streets.”

On the other hand, the lawyer Sandy O’Gill argued taking support of the protestors stating that their actions did not raise sufficient fear that would lead to a breach of the peace charge. Taylor even drew historical references such as the suffragette movement in justification of their path of action.

Even though all four protestors were convicted on the charge of breaching the peace by Sheriff McCulloch. Roberts, Moulin, and Kerr were admonished while Taylor was fined for his actions. Roberts further shed light on her upcoming course of action to protest against the ongoing climate crisis and cost-of-living crisis.

The tussle between the moral imperative felt by the activists and the legal actions followed by the disruption of the UCI World Cycling Championship has taken the cycling community and beyond by storm. As they remain resolute in their commitment to embark on further protests, it signals their determination to address global issues.
