Not being in the best of form in his first cyclocross race since the conclusion of the 2023 season, he entered the Exact Cross race in Essen. The cyclist attributed to the challenging winter conditions behind his unusual start to his cyclocross winter. Even though Van Aert triumphed in the muddy event, he decided to call himself out of the upcoming cycling events

In an interview with Cycling News, Van Aert states the reason behind his decision to skip the cycling championships, “If the Belgian championships had been held closer to the Christmas period, I would have liked to participate, but now it does not work. The World Championships are again at the beginning of February. I have already done the Worlds-spring [Classics] combination, but now I choose something else.”

Despite accomplishing the fifth win in his career, it was on December 9, Saturday that Van Aert declared to not take part in the Belgian race. In this way, he played down his ambitions for the race and downplayed any notion of an easy win while being respectful to his fellow competitors.

Strategic efforts to debut on-road

The Belgian rider has always been known for stunning the cycling community with his prowess in both the worlds of road racing and cyclocross. Drawing inspiration from his skills, Van Aert wishes to embark on a new journey by accepting a transition and stepping foot on the road season.

In this way, the cyclist wishes to maintain a balance in his overall cycling calendar by adapting himself to this new approach. By highlighting the expertise of his fellow racers, Van Aert stated that underestimating them would be a mistake and dismissed the fact that he faces a lack of competition in the Belgian race.

Hence, Van Aert kept a grounded approach focusing on the challenges and assessments that would follow after his ten-day training camp in Spain. On the other hand, in this case, his cyclocross discipline and physical fitness will help him to survive splitting the traditional road season preparations.
