“Another Year, Do the Olympics, Then Ciao” 37-Year-Old Colombian Cyclist Likely to Reconsider Post-Paris Retirement After Fresh New Offers

It is often uncertain what life will throw at your path and Rigoberto Uran is having a firsthand experience of the same. The famed Colombian cycling legend is looking to reconsider his decision to retire with recent exciting news coming his way. While the 37-year-old wanted to hang up his bike after the upcoming Paris Olympics, a two-year deal has made him rethink his decision. However, as lucrative as the two-year offer is, Uran is very much in the doldrums himself considering the impending perils of the road. 

This is the reason Uran has yet to decide on whether to call off his pre-decided retirement or not. So what are the things that are bothering Uran? Will the cyclist be able to continue in the same manner as before? Let’s now dive into the story and find out all the details below. 

Rigoberto Uran at the crossroads of cycling dilemma

Rigoberto Uran’s initial call, “I’m going to give it another year, do the Olympics, then ciao”, is now likely to be reconsidered. Speaking to Canal RCN on ‘Buen Dia Colombia’, Uran revealed about an offer he received recently. Shedding light on the matter, the 37-year-old stated that accepting the offer would give him a chance to extend his illustrious career to 20 years. 

However, on the flip side of the coins, there were reasons that made Uran give a second thought. Reflecting on the dangers of the road, the cyclist stated, “I no longer made the decisions alone, there are a number of things that have to be looked at with my family and team environment.”

Portraying a canvas of contrasting emotions, Uran stated that he was fearful of both crashes and retirement. He went on to say that retiring from the sport after such a long time sends a shiver down the spine. Uran also did not rule out the need to seek psychological help to cope with the transition. However, continuing with the sport would mean sureshot exposure to crashes. This was something that he could not afford as he could not see his family’s pain. Trying to draw a bottom line, the Colombian athlete concluded that he might be “too old” for the sport. 

However, this was not the only instance Uran had announced his retirement. Previously, the cyclist retired in 2022. On being asked about the situation, Uran stated that his passion for racing brought him back to the game. Now whether Uran still has the fire burning within him or not is a question for the future to answer.

A throwback to Rigoberto Uran’s bejeweled career 

Rigoberto Uran made his debut at the prestigious Tour De France in 2009. Since then, he has clinched stage victories on the three occasions over a period of ten years. The Colombian ended as the runner-up on a couple of occasions at the Giro d’Italia in 2013 & 2014, respectively. He also finished second at the 2017 edition of the Tour de France behind Chris Froome.

However, transitioning into a more corporate role, Uran now organizes El Giro de Rigo and Grand Fondo. These races came out to be overly successful with active participation from several pros from Colombia. Renowned personality Wout Van Aert also made an appearance in the Autumn edition of the race. Uran also has a tele-documentary running on the RCN television.
