In a recent setback at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Uzbekistan’s cycling talent, Aleksey Fomovskiy, has tested positive for banned substances. This makes him the fourth athlete to be caught in a doping scandal at the prestigious event.

The International Testing Agency (ITA) started on October 5th, announcing the suspension of Aleksey Fomovskiy after his sample revealed an Adverse Analytical Finding for Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids and other prohibited substances. 

Cyclist Failing Drug Tests in Asian Games

The collected samples during an in-competition anti-doping control held on September 28, 2023, specifically during the Cycling Track Men’s Omnium-Points Race. The consequences for the 22-year-old cyclist were swift and severe. They have provisionally suspended him immediately and now have the option to request the analysis of the B-sample. It is a standard practice to validate the initial findings.

This doping revelation has cast a shadow over Fomovskiy’s commendable fifth-place finish in the men’s omnium points race. It took place on the very same day as the test. Unfortunately, Fomovskiy’s case is not an isolated incident. It marks the fourth confirmed doping case at the Hangzhou Asian Games. 

Recent doping incidents highlight battle for clean competition

Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s long-distance runner, Mohammed Yousef Al-Asiri, Afghanistan’s boxer Mohammad Khaibar Nooristani, and Philippine cyclist Ariana Thea Patrice Dormitorio Evangelista had all tested positive for banned substances. The ITA, entrusted with the anti-doping program at the Hangzhou Asian Games by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). They committed it to maintaining the integrity of the competition through rigorous testing procedures.

It is important to note that confirming a failed doping test typically takes several days. It allows athletes the opportunity to request the analysis of their B-samples. This meticulous process ensures the accuracy and fairness of the entire anti-doping protocol.
