According to Eurosport, a panel would be formed who will hold sole authority to exercise their decision in times of need. They would need to determine whether the current weather conditions, including the temperature and humidity, are capable of posing a health risk to the rider. The report further states that the recent amendments are based on the 2015 Extreme Weather Protocol. This protocol was designed to protect the riders from all kinds of harsh conditions and not limited to only hot weather.
Some of the changes that we might see after the implementation of the new rule would be that the authority would have a covered starting zone for the riders. Another potential change might come in the form of changes in the starting time of the races. The panel could also look to amend or delay a particular race section. Besides these changes, racers would also have the luxury of cold drinks and ice supply to beat the heat. UCI is looking to increase the number of bikes that offer refueling services further. With the changes expected to be in motion from January end, let’s hear what the UCI has to say on the matter.

UCI’s take on the latest changes
After announcing the new regulations, UCI shared their concern about the rising issue of global warming. They mentioned in a statement, “In view of the climate changes that the world has been facing in recent years, the UCI wishes to better define the optimal conditions for organising road races in hot climates, with a new high-temperature protocol.”
On an interesting note, the UCI is not the only organization to implement changes due to extreme heat. Recently, the Australian Open organizers suspended its matches due to hot temperatures. FIFA too, allows for multiple cooling breaks in extremely hot temperatures.
