At 90 years old, Peter Langford’s recent cycling feat from Lands End to John O’Groats stands as a remarkable achievement. In a heartfelt conversation with Cycling Weekly, Langford radiates contentment and gratitude, despite his challenging journey.

“I’m very well,” he shares, savoring a piece of cake and a couple of cups of tea. “It’s beautiful to see the north of Scotland.” This wasn’t Langford’s maiden voyage on the daunting Lands End to John O’Groats (LeJog) route. In fact, he conquered it for the fourth time, setting off on August 23, all while raising funds for two homelessness charities.

Langford’s secret to defying age? He emphasizes the significance of good health and a sensible lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mental stimulation are key ingredients. He also reveals past health battles, including a near-death encounter with meningitis 25 years ago, highlighting the role of healthcare in his journey.

Langford’s ride wasn’t without its share of trials, especially in the challenging terrain of Cornwall. While many expect Scotland to be the most arduous part, Langford explains that the hills, while high, are generally manageable. The true tests were encountered along Scotland’s north coast.

Amidst reminiscing about the ride, Langford recalls some demanding moments, like pushing his bike uphill on a steep Cumbria slope. Yet, he also recounts triumphant instances, buoyed by determination and energy tablets that propelled him up daunting hills.

For Langford, however, it’s not the landscapes or physical trials that shine brightest. Instead, he treasures the human connections cultivated along the way. He cherishes time spent with family, as his youngest son joined him for the first 10 days, and his eldest son rode alongside for three days.

His daughter even joined him for the final three days. Beyond family, he formed bonds with various friends, cousins, and fellow cyclists, underscoring that these human interactions held more significance than the ride itself.

Langford’s journey doubles as a charitable endeavor, with a goal of raising £50,000 for the Salvation Army and the Access Community Trust. While he’s made commendable progress, securing £30,000 thus far, he’s committed to reaching his target. Donations can be made on JustGiving, underscoring Langford’s profound awareness of homelessness and his unwavering commitment to making a difference.
