Once again political factors have pawed the sports leading to uncertain future of events. The political unrest situation in Africa has led to a significant setback by postponing one of the notable cycling events of the continent, Tropicale Amissa Bongo. 

The race holds a notable significance in the cycling sport, however, it has fallen prey to major political events even though there prevails less consequence. This article chronicles the present African political scenario in detail along with its impact on the cycling competition.

The inception of the cycling race that is in turmoil

The cycling race in question, La Tropicale Amissa Bongo, in the African continent holds a prestigious position since it honors the memory of the daughter of former President Omar Bongo, Albertine Amissa Bongo. President Bongo is a respectable figure in Africa since he has secured a significant role during the post-independence history of the country. 

 

Therefore, this race has been one of the earliest platforms granting the African talents to showcase their skills and leave a mark on the global podium. However, the future of the event carrying profound meaning is under skepticism caused by the military coup that took place in Gabon. As a result of this military move, President Bongo after whose sister the race has been named is under house arrest.

As reported by the Cycling News, Kayishema Tity Thierry, the renowned sports journalist from Rwanda confirmed the postponement of the cycling event on Twitter, “The 17th edition of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo will not take place in next January. This decision, in agreement with the authorities, is dictated by a rethinking of the priorities for the coming months, in the context of the renewal of the institutions of the Republic of Gabon.

A glimpse of hope for the cycling community amidst ambiguity

Over the years, La Tropicale Amissa Bongo has evolved to be an event that acted as a stepping stone for African talents. Showcasing their talent at the event, the cyclists reached the pinnacle of success by entering European racing circuits and securing the top spot in WorldTour.

In the recent edition, Geoffrey Soupe of TotalEnergies seized the winning title before his victory for the Grand Tour stage at the Vuelta a España. Hence, Soup is the ideal example revealing the opportunities that La Tropicale Amissa Bongo endow African cyclists with.

Even though the future of the event is under dubiousness, there prevails a glimmer of hope with another prominent race, Tour du Rwanda, returning in 2024. Although the event had left the UCI calendar, the authorities confirmed its comeback to be scheduled between February 18 to 25.
