Turning Tragedy Into Action, Serra Catholic High School Cheerleading Team Initiates Fundraising Event in Memory of Their Beloved Friend

The cheerleading community of the Serra Catholic High School of Pittsburgh is known for its unity and dedication. However, this time, the cause has not been joyous. The team has made it to the headlines for their heartwarming display of solidarity to support the grieving family of their classmate, Samantha Kalkbrenner.

Heartfelt tribute from Serra Catholic High School

In a devastating road accident, Kalkbrenner’s life was cut short, leaving a deep void in the hearts of all those who know her among the Serra Catholic High School community and beyond. Apart from being a student and a member of the cheerleading team, everybody knew her as the embodiment of joy and love.

In his interview with CBS News, Robert Childs, the principal of Serra Catholic shared his views about Kalkbrenner while battling his emotions, “She was the beating heart of her class. Remembering her will not be difficult because she was loved by all. Her perpetual smile radiated joy and love to all she met.”

In an attempt of remembering their friend and raise awareness about safe driving rules, the school cheerleading team adopted a proactive step while offering their support to the grieving family. 

Cheerleading team channeling grief into action

The initiative taken by the Serra Catholic High School cheerleading team to launch an online merchandise store apart from raising funds conveyed the powerful message of driving safely. Through the online store, the team has sold various products, including t-shirts, window stickers, and hoodies.

All the products poignantly carried the message saying, ‘Drive safe. Somebody loves you. #SmilingForSam.” These items will serve as a stark reminder pointing out the cruciality of adhering to traffic rules and expounding on the loss experienced by Samantha’s family.  

The grants collected from selling the merchandised items are proceeded directly to Kalkbrenner’s family. In such a distressing time, the financial support for the family marks the initiative to be a noble one. This joint effort serves as a testament to the lasting impact that Kalkbrenner had on the people around her.
