“That’s What I Want” – APSU Junior Cheerleader Balances Pediatric Oncology Dreams and STEM Rigor With Remarkable Precision in Leadership

Managing academic pursuits and cheerleading routines like a pro, Gracey Suggs recently made headlines for her audacious career goals. In the corridors of Austin Peay State University, this junior performer has been echoing accomplishments, and that too within just her second year on campus. Focused on building a fruitful course, she chose her path in biology major while seizing a pre-med track. 

Gracey’s cheerleading journey took off after she secured an early graduation, armed with her dual-enrollment credits. Gaining recognition from Montgomery Central High School, the Clarksville native’s academic prowess has truly been undeniable. Now, as she eyed a career in pediatric oncology, the young performer mentioned balancing her passion and STEM studies while aiming for the best of both worlds.

Cheerleading enthusiast navigates diverse careers

Soaring high in cheerleading sessions, Gracey’s determination to become a pediatric oncologist began at an early age. Since seventh grade, the iconic athlete boldly prepped for vivid career demands, propelling her through the upper-division courses. 

With steady aspirations in mind, she even mapped out her future strategies. Pacing herself beyond the cheerleading routines, Gracey shared her tactics in never burdening a semester with more than two high-level science classes.

In a smart take, she effectively managed to handle all sectors, elaborating, “It just kind of came to me that’s what I want to do,” as she further noted, “That’s just where my focus has been, and nothing has caused me to change my mind.”

Navigating the academic courses of genetics, chemistry, and physics, the APSU cheerleading icon confessed encountering a lot of work simultaneously. However, she held on to her spirits, planning an illustrious career ahead and joining another prestigious campaign in dance routines. 

Emerging victorious beyond professional accomplishments 

Gracey won her spot as a Govs cheerleading candidate, approaching her educational tales with similar efforts. However, her inspiring zest was not the only stance, with Azari Ford from New Jersey recently emerging as the 2024 Eagles Pro Bowl cheerleader.

Selected by her peers, this honor marked the pinnacle of her six-year journey with the squad. As a first-year captain, the cheerleading star reflected on her transformative experience after earning a BFA in dance. 

With a minor in business, Azari embodied true perseverance as she left an indelible mark on the University of the Arts. While her commitments extended beyond the stage, the young performer returned to teach at her childhood dance studio during the pandemic. 

Highlighted as the 2021-22 Eagles Performer of the Year, Azari Ford showcased a deep connection to cheerleading ventures. While Gracey Suggs’ strategies forged a path in successfully managing her dual excellence, she stood as a beacon of unimaginable ambitions. Cheering for uncharted territories, these resilient athletes defied all odds in meeting their desires with dedication.
