In the wake of New Year’s jubilance, a somber veil descended upon Louisiana. One of the city schools, Walker High School lost their 17-year-old, highly-spirited cheerleader, Blakeleigh Weems to a tragic accident. The cheerleader was adored by peers and faculty alike and her passing away dimmed the vibrant energy of the school community.
The car crash took place on January 1, New Year’s Day which left the cheerleaders with a fatal injury. As the school community mourns the loss and grapples with the profound impact of her untimely passing, investigations are progressing to find out the consequences that led to the tragic outcome.
Tragic loss of a promising cheerleader

As per the reports, the cheerleader was traveling in a car that was coming off the Interstate exit ramp at South Range Avenue in Louisiana. It was then another car that was heading north on the same road crashed into the driver’s side leaving Weems with fatal injuries. Although she had been rushed to the hospital immediately, the cheerleader succumbed to her injuries.
A senior at Walker High School, Weems had recently received an acceptance to the Lousiana State University. Along with her cheerleading passion, she looked forward to nurturing her dreams and wished to study marketing and law. Her ambition and dedication were reflected in her aspirations which were abruptly cut short.
The school community, friends and family fondly recalled the cheerleader’s vivacious spirit. One of her friends, Amber Edwards Reno, shared her condolences through a Facebook post where she described the cheerleader as, “You were incredibly smart, beautiful inside and out, and so talented. You lit up every room you entered and left a mark on everyone you met.” Weems had a multifaceted personality and shared a passion for digital media, singing and Disney.
Community’s response to the loss

As a gesture of paying tribute, Geaux Sharp Athletics, the local cheerleading gym, dedicated an event in honor of Weems. With this, all proceeds would be channeled to support her grieving family. Besides, the cheerleader’s coach Haleigh Sharp, took the initiative of hosting a clinic to raise funds to help the Weems family in their distressing time. January 8, Monday, the Walker High School has canceled all classes as they have planned a memorial service.
They have extended their sympathies to Weems’ family and friends. The service will be taking place at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. In the meanwhile, even though police officials have traced the driver involved in the crash, the whereabouts of the person are yet to be revealed. With this, the contributing factors that led to the fatal crash will also be discovered.

The Walker High School along with the entire community has come forward and has stuck together to overcome the momentary loss. The cheerleader’s untimely departure has left an irreplaceable void. Her legacy will continue to uplift and inspire the community as a dedicated student, spirited cheerleader and a source of joy for many.
