A single gunshot shattered the tranquility of a Talmadge night when a clash between rival gangs transpired into a tragic episode. The dangerous stunt performed by 19-year-old Juan Diaz Velazco forever altered the life of a 17-year-old cheerleader from Lincoln High School. 

The victim had been an innocent bystander who bore the collateral damage by involving herself in a web of violence. Struck by a bullet, the cheerleader now grapples with paralysis while the assailant faces charges of attempted murder. The incident throws light on the urgent call for justice and the destructive aftermath of gang violence.

Gunman accused of paralyzing a cheerleader

The incident occurred on the fateful night of October 28, in the community of El Cajon Boulevard at Winona Avenue. A clash took place among two rival gangs outside a Talmadge house party and left an innocent bystander, a Lincoln High School cheerleader paralyzed. 

In the recent development of the case, Diaz Velazco, the suspect, has been charged with a*sault with a firearm and offenses related to attempted murder. Besides, the assailant causing harm to the cheerleader has pleaded not guilty in the San Diego Superior Court. There prevails a possibility of up to 72 years to life in prison if convicted.

As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune, in an attempt to assure the residents, Summer Stephan, the District Attorney, released a statement stating, “This case demonstrates the destructive consequences of gang violence on neighborhoods and people who want to live in peace. We will keep fighting to make our neighborhoods safe and hold criminals accountable.The charges included in the allegations covered the offenses of the act that were executed for the benefit of a street gang. 

Nevertheless, this is not the first time that the assailant has amassed charges at the hands of the law.

Previous convictions of the assailant and the struggle of the victim

Diaz Velazco, who has been held accountable for the injury inflicted on the cheerleader, previously in 2021, had been subjected to juvenile conviction for causing assa*lt using a deadly weapon and was legally barred from firearm possession. However, the attacker continued with his violent spree that reached the tragic zenith on that October night. This time, the 17-year-old cheerleader was the innocent victim of the circumstances. 

The young girl was shot in the back which led to paralysis altering her life forever. In an attempt to seek fairness that the victim has been going through, the head of the People’s Association of Justice Advocates, Shane Harris, called for peace and justice. After the Talmadge shooting incident, the San Diego community witnessed four separate incidents of gang-related conflicts.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of one of the greatest societal perils of gun attacks that the community is still grappling with. There prevails an urgent need for intervention to break the cycle, ensuring that no other person has to go through what the cheerleader has been subjected to.
