Life was at the cusp of a promising future for the dedicated cheerleader as she was under rigorous training all set to be a part of the Acrobatics and Tumbling team at Baylor University. However, life had different plans for Washington and it was on April 18 that Washington accompanied by three other teammates on their way back from an out-of-town cheer practice made a stop at an H-E-B grocery store in Elgin.
None of them had any premonition that this ordinary pitstop was going to change their lives forever. Mistaking another car to be their own, they attempted to enter the vehicle. Following this, the tragedy set in when Pedro Tello Rodriguez, the owner of the car fired multiple shots that left Washington with multiple serious injuries.

Washington shared her anxiety from fearing that she would fail to achieve her ambition of becoming a collegiate athlete in one of her interviews with Fox 7 Austin, “When I saw the coaches at the hospital, I did cry because I thought my dreams were crushed at that moment.” However, the traumatic experience failed to dampen her spirit.

The bullets fired at her left Payton Washington with a damaged diaphragm and pancreas, shattered spleen, and two holes in her stomach along with 32 staples. Considering the situation that she was in, a lot of people would have easily surrendered. However, Washington ensured to conserve her physical and mental tenacity to pull through the ordeal.
While the doctors had expected a lengthy stay, her strength of will helped her to defy all odds and she was released from the hospital within a week making her remarkable comeback on the cheerleading mat.
Washington gave insights about the support she has received from the teammates of her Acrobatics and Tumbling team at Baylor University, “Everyone wants everyone to accomplish amazing things, new skills, and they want everyone to make it, so it just really feels like a family, and now you always have someone with you, next to you, and has your back.” Her unfaltering personality paired with a fostered supportive environment by her teammates catered Washington to pursue her dreams.
