Bull fighting in the Alcurdia arena bullring is a matter of pride and part of Mallorca heritage. Speculations of various kinds emerged after the musical chairs that followed in the elections back in May.
The city now had a tripartite administration, consisting of three parties: Partido Popular, Vox, Unió per Alcudia. Citizens believed that the new government would reinstate the bull ring and allow for fights to resume.

The bullring in Sant Ferran Bastion of the Renaissance was constructed in 1892, making Alcudia one of the island’s primary bullfighting locations. They customarily held bullfights twice a year, on July 25 for the Sant Jaume festival and August 15 for the Mare de Déu d’Agost carnival. But following a number of protests by Alcudia residents challenging the legitimacy of the sport, it has faced harsh criticism.
The present mayor of the town, Fina Linares, completely ruled out any instance of the ring being used for bullfights but assured citizens that the ring will undergo thorough restoration. “The bullring must be preserved as a heritage, historical and architectural asset,” she said while speaking to the media.
The previous administration in charge announced plans to use the ring for social-cultural activities in 2021, after they informed the public that concession for managing the ring was terminated.

A step towards a fresh path
Understanding that the bullring is a part of the city’s heritage and its importance, the government decided to start a complete “clean up” of the place and restore its beauty. The mayor explained that complete restoration of the ring will happen but they are unclear on the usage of the facility. The committee members have provided several ideas regarding the usage of the bullring, but they have not reached to a concrete solution yet.
The iconic bullring has not hosted a bull fight in over six years now, with the last one happening all the way back in 2017. The final project has yet to be fully defined, but “the idea is to turn it into a centre of activities for associations and cultural groups and, if this is possible, to set up rehearsal rooms for musicians.” is what the government officials said back in 2021. Most recently, the bullring hosted a theatre night and rock concert.
