Milwaukee Brewers is now in a soup! Major League Baseball (MLB) has yet again made it to the headlines for its unwavering commitment to eradicate the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PED). This time again, the ban has been made on the Milwaukee Brewers’ right-hander, Jean Carlos Mejía.
Testing positive for the second time in a row, this verdict has served as a serious blow for Mejía being handed down a 162-game suspension. Violating the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program led the league to take this drastic step against Mejía.

The 27-year-old player who previously played for the Cleveland Indians in MLB, now plays for the Milwaukee Brewers. Mejía has tested positive for a synthetic steroid, a derivative of testosterone known as Stanozol. However, surprisingly, this is not the initial instance of Mejía’s encounter with this PED variation.
Prior to this incident, in the month of May 2022, he had been suspended from 80 games as a result of similar allegations brought against him involving Stanozol. However, due to the recurrence of the offense, this time the suspension is much lengthier. This decision demonstrates MLB’s intent to preserve integrity within the game.
Matt Arnold, Brewers’ general manager said in his statement to the Daily Mail, “Milwaukee Brewers fully support MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and share in the goal of eliminating performance-enhancing substances from our program.”

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Mejía is participating in the major league season for the third time. The proverb “Third is the charm” is not applicable to him since his career statistics with 8.32 ERA in 28 games are adorned with multiple challenges. In his journey to constantly prove his worth, getting suspended for the second time makes the road ahead even tougher for Mejía.
As pointed out by Craig Counsell, Brewer’s manager, such violations are followed up by major consequences extending outside the suspension statement. Among the consequences, the suspended player, Mejía in this case, will not be allowed to establish himself in major leagues, Although this time away from the sport will serve the player an opportunity to upskill himself and introspect his journey so far, it will have an influential effect on his career trajectory.
MLB’s adherence to their strict decision presents JC Mejía’s case as a cautionary tale for aspiring athletes. Besides, it presents a stark reminder that baseball always prioritizes a level playing field. In this process, the league authorities can go to any extent to protect their commitment to combat the use of PEDs.
