A beautiful day out in the sun turned out to be a nightmare for a young 13-year-old American kid, who collapsed at his summer football practise in Bardstown. This would’ve proven to be fatal if not for the quick thinking of an athletic trainer and the coaches present on the field.
This unfortunate incident took place on the 20th of June in a practise field Nelson County Middle School. Carson Dickey stepped onto the field expecting a regular day out playing football with his friends. Coach William Moore assumed that he just wanted to use this game to get into shape and get a feel of the sport, so he brought him onto the team. He remembers, ever so clearly, that when the players were performing the 40 yard dashes, someone sensed something wrong with Dickey.

Out of absolutely nowhere, Carson collapsed on the field and was knocked out cold. His teammates rushed to his rescue where they couldn’t sense a heartbeat and he was not breathing. Moore immediately contacted 911 without wasting any time. He also called for athletic trainer Brittany Woodward, who was at another practise nearby. He sprinted down a hill to help revive Carson.
“I came out here for conditioning and well…,” said Carson Dickey. “I really can’t remember anything from that day.”
Carson’s mom had just left the grocery store when a coach called to let her know that something was wrong with her son’s wellbeing and needs her immediate attention. She rushed back onto the field within a few minutes and was shocked to see her son lying unconscious. Woodward wasted no time and started using the lifesaving defibrillator on Carson. And that’s it. This action caused Carson’s heart to beat again. Emergency services arrived at the scene and rushed the young athlete to Louisville hospital, where tests revealed a different story altogether. Carson’s situation on the field was not related to the scorching sun out or the exertion of his body felt due to the demanding nature of the sport.

Quick action gives the boy a second chance
“I come to waking up in the hospital with my dad and my mom standing next to me. I asked my dad where am I, what happened to me? He explained the whole story to me and I was just in disbelief,” said Carson.
“Thank you all for what you did. You are true heroes,” he said.

They found that the eighth-grader has Wolff- Parkinson-White syndrome. To the uninitiated, this condition creates an extra pathway in the heart. The electricity in Carson’s heart goes down that pathway at a high speed and that’s what put his heart out of rhythm, causing him to collapse on the field.
Less than two weeks after being hospitalised, Carson was back on the field playing football. This time, so much more grateful to those who help give him a second chance at life.
