“Old is Gold’ is a saying that comes to mind ever so often. On this very site, we see countless stories every day of elderly people achieving incredible feats of strength and endurance. It’s a true testament to the greatest generation that their discipline in their early years has led to the point. The fact that they can achieve feats of immense courage and daring also needs to be addressed more often than not.

Today, we are diving deep into one such story, where four grandparents skydive together in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. That’s right, Sonia Anderson, 55, Alison Horne, 67, Eileen Alderman, 72, and Nancy Charlesworth, 72, will be jumping off a plane on September 24!

Age is just a Number

The four women, who met just a few months ago, are keenly looking forward to the magical once-in-a-lifetime experience. They are all waiting in anticipation as the date moves closer and closer. “If we survive it is going to be an experience we can bond over for the rest of our lives,” Sonia said. she added that, while they are all really excited, they are equally nervous about attempting the dive.

However, these women have an incredible attitude to life. “Age is nothing. We get up in the morning and we do as much as we can,” they say. The women, though elderly, still work and do meaningful in their community. They claim that, while life is too short, they are only old in age, not inside their heads.

“We are all still 21,” they say, as the big day gets closer. The group met while volunteering at the Elizabethan Hall in Newbiggin, turning the building into a community hub and garden. The self-described ‘Newbiggin Nana Ninjas’ are planning to run a coffee morning at the Elizabethan Hall for charitable causes.

Active in their Community

The ninjas are raising money for people with cancer and their families with their work in the community. Sonia says after her father got diagnosed with cancer, her friends made sure she had the right support. : “(Her father) got home at three o’clock in the afternoon from the hospital and at five o’clock Macmillan were there, and they were there every day.”

The Newbiggin Ninja Nanas are clearly an inspiration and aim to continue doing good work for every worthy cause. The group has already raised hundreds of pounds so far from cash collections and their online fundraiser. Consider helping out their cause and making the world a better place, one step at a time.
