Himalayas is one such destination that attracts every mountaineer in the world. People from all over the globe train for long periods to complete what they tout as one of the most difficult treks for climbers. The Himalayas have 18 summits that every mountaineer wishes to reach. One of these is the 6,476m high Mera Peak in Nepal.

Despite the dangers and many challenges of scaling the summit of mountains, people turn up in huge numbers. In this year alone, the authorities in Nepal granted over 450 permits for climbing Mount Everest. Over 12 people have already lost their lives in the process. Out of these 12, one life lost was of a senior officer in Malaysian Civil Defence. Another climber part of the same expedition reached the summit but was nowhere to be found after.

Devastating news has emerged from the Mera Peak, with the death of a renowned mountain climber from Malaysia. The news left everyone in the community in great shock and in a state of mourning. But this has once again highlighted just how difficult of a feat mountain climbing is.

Malaysian mountaineer succumbs to Himalayas’ extremities

The Mera Peak in Nepal is one of the most sought-after summits of the Himalayas. The season of autumn between the months of September to November is when a mountaineer sets foot to climb and reach the summit. Average temperatures during the day are at 12 degrees.

Reports of the death of renowned Malaysian climber Hazlami Ahmad Nizam came on Thursday. Locals informed the authorities of his demise after they found his body hanging on a rope. According to the locals, they found his body in a region where temperatures can go as low as minus 30 degrees.

It is likely that the extremely cold conditions may have played a part in the Malaysian mountaineer’s untimely demise.

Hazlami was a seasoned and experienced mountaineer. He had only recently trekked at the Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal and Mount Xueshan in Taiwan. His death has sent a shockwave in the mountaineering community and condolences have poured in from all over.

The extremities of mountain climbing

They will recover the body of the 33-year-old mountaineer by means of a helicopter, highlighting just how dangerous and difficult the area where they found him dead is. His family will travel to Nepal in order to retrieve the body and take it back to perform his last rites.

People filled social media with messages of love and condolences after they learned of his passing away. He was quite popular in the climbing circles, having made a name for himself through his sheer determination. There was a heartfelt condolence message for him from his college, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, where Mr Hazlami graduated from in 2013.

He is survived by his wife and three children, with a daughter who just celebrated her first birthday in March.

The number of deaths on Mt. Everest is a cause of grave concern. Mountaineers have encountered scores of dead bodies in their climbs to the top, showing just how deadly it can be. While we must applaud the courage of these climbers, authorities must consider ramping up safety measures in order to minimize the number of deaths, at a peak that attracts thousands of people every year.
