The desperate plea for assistance reached the Honolulu Fire Department at precisely 11:44 a.m., setting off a rapid and determined reaction from a powerhouse group of six units boasting 17 trained firefighters. Time was of the essence, and the heroic teams assembled at the location by noon.
As the firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw a harrowing sight: a man in his 60s, unconscious, sprawled out on the treacherous trail. But before they could fully assess the situation, they paused to appreciate the bravery of a bystander. The man fearlessly took charge and was already administering CPR to the stricken hiker.
Unfazed by the rugged terrain, the firefighters took over, seamlessly continuing the vital life-saving measures initiated by the bystander. And just as tensions were rising, a ray of hope appeared in the sky as the department’s trusty Air 2 helicopter, swooping in to airlift the injured hiker to safety.
First responders shine in adversity
The helicopter hovered above, as the skilled firefighters swiftly applied a mechanical chest compression device to stabilize the hiker’s condition. With great precision, they managed the smooth transfer of medical care as the patient was carefully hoisted into the aircraft.

Every moment counted in the race to save a life, and they toiled hard to maintain his circulation during the journey. At 12:45 p.m., they delivered the hiker with gentleness into the capable hands of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.
