The allure of conquering Mount Everest is a dream shared by many, but it comes with inherent risks and challenges. Unfortunately, the formidable peak has claimed yet another life, this time that of a seasoned Malaysian mountaineer.

Zhang Ruxin, a 51-year-old Malaysian, embarked on a journey to Nepal to scale Mount Everest. Armed with three decades of mountaineering experience, she seemed well-prepared for the expedition. However, tragedy struck as she fell victim to severe hypoxia during her ascent, and on the 10th of October, she tragically passed away.

According to her sister, the ill-fated mountaineer arrived in Nepal on the 1st of October, accompanied by a group of ten fellow climbers. They planned to commence their Mount Everest expedition the following day. Unfortunately, on the 7th of October, Ruxin began experiencing breathlessness. In response, the group decided to set up camp at a lower altitude, hoping it would improve her oxygen intake.

Despite their efforts, her condition did not improve. Her sister shared, “The group relocated my sister from Annapurna Base Camp (approximately 4,130 meters above sea level) to Machhapuchchhre Base Camp (roughly 3,600 meters above sea level) for supplemental oxygen. Unfortunately, she passed away at the camp around 2 o’clock on the 10th of October.”

Due to severe weather conditions, her body couldn’t be airlifted from the mountain. Instead, it was a painstaking seven-hour journey to carry her down the slopes. Presently, her body remains in Nepal and has been sent for autopsy at a local hospital. Her sister explained, “We are awaiting the autopsy report and death certificate.”

In the meantime, their mother has decided to have her sister’s body cremated in Nepal before bringing her remains back to Malaysia for her ultimate resting place. “At the moment, no one can tell us how long this process will take,” the sister shared. The news of her passing also deeply saddened a local blogger.
