The world of content is moving at an increasingly faster rate. In fact, it’s getting a little difficult to keep an eye on trends and consume the most popular shows. What’s new today will be pushed to the back tomorrow. So, Netflix decided to make an unfamiliar move among streaming giants. The platform began leaning towards sports content with originals like Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing. However, this is nowhere near where Netflix decided to stop.

The streaming company is now in its next phase. This includes having mounted a few live events over the past year. Moreover, they have also arranged for a nine-hole golf match, which will feature athletes from the two aforementioned documentaries.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, F1 drivers Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris, and Carlos Sainz will participate in this golfing extravaganza. They will go up against PGA Tour golfers Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas in a golf match. The event will serve as the precursor to the events leading up to F1’s inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 18. We can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

We love to see how our sports series have brought increased fandom to sports leagues and competitions all over the world,” one Netflix executive said.
He believes that “The Netflix Cup will take that energy to the next level with global stars from two popular hits competing in our first-ever live sports event.” As of now, NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Apple TV+, Paramount+, and WBD’s Max have all ventured into the sports industry before Netflix.
We really think that we can have a really strong offering for sports fans on Netflix without having to be part of the difficulty of the economic model of live sports licensing,” co-CEO Ted Sarandos. during an earnings call. He also gleefully boasted the success of Netflix’s latest sports-adjacent programming.

Netflix and Live Events

In the past, Netflix has dabbled with live events. The company’s first event was Chris Rock’s stand-up special ‘Selective Outrage,’ which went very well.
However,  a reunion for season four “Love Is Blind’ in April failed quite spectacularly. In fact, it faced so many technical difficulties due to which the show was broadcast an hour later than usual. By this point, it was not even being broadcast live.
As for the Netflix Cup, the players will be divided into four teams of two, one golfer and one driver. The teams will go head-to-head before the two top teams face off in the final. The feature will be produced by Excel Sports Management, which manages several golfers.
