Remembering Melissa Hoskins’ Remarkable Display at the 2016 Olympics a Day After Suffering a Gruesome Injury

There is great admiration in the world for athletes across every sport. The amount of hard work, dedication an athlete puts to excelling and winning accolades is a journey worth watching. Late Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins showed why there is such great appreciation for athletes and why they are held in such high regard.

In 2016, during the Rio Olympics, the Australian cyclist met with a terrible accident along with her pursuit team. Her team transferred her from the velodrome to the hospital, but no one would have imagined her participating in the race just the very next day.

Melissa Hoskins was an inspiration for everyone

Equipped with a back brace after the crash, they put Melissa Hoskins on the stretcher and went straight to the hospital. Her teammates from the pursuit team walked off with minor burns and bruises. She and the team were at the end of the back straight when they crashed and fell on the banked wooden surface.

The medical staff cleared Melissa of any serious injuries, and that was more than enough for her.

Fans praying for her well-being were shocked and equally surprised by her passion as she returned to the camp. From wincing and grunting in pain the previous day to walking back with a beaming smile was a delight for the fans.

“I’m grateful that I have nothing broken but it wasn’t exactly the most comfortable position and comfortable feeling I’ve had,” Hoskins said after being released from the hospital. Her team eventually finished fifth in the pursuit race but were lauded for their undying spirit and passion.

Melissa Hoskins became a household name after guiding her team and Australia to the title of world champions at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2015. She was also part of the team that finished fourth at the London Olympics.

Her legacy will forever live on

Just last week, the world record holder passed away in a car crash outside her residence. The entire cycling community and country were in a state of shock and mourning.

It is an unfortunate end to what was a wonderful and celebrated career that set anchor in 2017. As her family and close friends grieve in these devastating times, the athlete will always be regarded by all for her relentless hunger to compete and excel.
