Protesting for a cause is a much appreciated move. However, it might become tricky when one lets the emotions take the front seat. This is exactly the story of today’s article. Cyclists in Richmond Park have received a stern warning from the London Metropolitan Police regarding their behavior towards authorized motorists.

Complaints from female drivers have surfaced, reporting instances of abuse and harassment by male cyclists. The cause of this conflict arises from an alleged misunderstanding among some cyclists who erroneously believe that it prohibited motor vehicles in the park.

While they indeed restricted cars on certain park roads, such as Sawyers Hill on weekends, some authorized drivers are allowed access. In response to the escalating tensions, the Met’s Royal Parks Police stated on social media, addressing the issue.

They stated, “We have had several reports from female motorists who are authorized to drive on the closed roads in Richmond Park of abuse and harassment, including banging on the vehicle and throwing water over the car, by male cyclists, as they believe incorrectly that they are not authorized.”

The statement further elaborated, “This behavior is not acceptable and has caused upset, anxiety, and fear. Please be aware that permit holders are authorized to use the closed roads. We conduct regular checks on vehicles to ensure the drivers are authorized. Thank you.”

Richmond Park’s manager, Paul Richards, expressed deep concern over the reported incidents. He emphasized that harassment is a criminal offense and will not be tolerated.

The Royal Parks Charity announced that traffic reduction measures introduced during the pandemic in three London parks would become permanent.

Necessary Measures taken to make a change for the Cycling community

These measures included restricting traffic in certain areas and permanently closing specific vehicle links. While the London Cycling Campaign praised these changes, it was also noted that more decisive and rapid actions were required.

In another development, the Royal Parks Police reported stopping a driver who was traveling at 58mph in a 20mph zone on Sawyers Hill, reinforcing the importance of adhering to speed limits within the park. Although the overspeeding issues are a headache, cyclists need to be more tolerant and modest in their approach.
