He started off his tour with a magnificent win at the Down Under Classic Exhibition and carried his rich vein of form from the previous year into this race as well. Stage 2 of the Santos Tour Down Under was the hilliest day of the week so far and posed a tough challenge for all the cycling athletes. The race did not have any great moments of drama or intensity until the final few kilometers remaining.
With about 4kms in the race to go, Quinn Simmons of Team Lidl-Trek and Bastien Tronchon of Team Decathlon-AG2R tried to break into an attack and it almost paid off. The peloton did not relent and there were frequent attempts of attacks by the riders, all put to rest by them. Tronchon’s teammate tried to block others from sneaking through but as the finish line approached, it got more violent.
There was one kilometre left and this is when Isaac turned on his magic. He broke away from the peloton and accelerated like a cheetah across the turf and leaped to the finish line to claim his first WorldTour Race.
“This is crazy. It’s so emotional,” Del Toro said right after the finish. “Last year was crazy, but this one… I don’t know what to say. It’s so much.” said the newest winner of the Tour Down Under Stage 2.
The Mexican cyclist finally delivers on his promise
The year 2023 was nothing short of extraordinary for the Mexican cycling genius. He won the Tour de l’Avenir and now has a podium finish and first place in just two races in 2024.
