After the daunting impact of one high-paced crash snatched life away too soon, the loss of a 44-year-old athlete left the cycling community in mourning. As champion rider Ethan Boyes’ demise made news this year, speculations surrounding his untimely departure sparked chaos among locals.

And now, the driver behind the wheels has been detained, facing multiple charges for his involuntary mishap. Besides hurting the cycling icon, the driver involved in this collision, Arnold Kinman Low, also faced injuries, but not as severe as Boyes. While Boyes passed away in hospital care, Low is currently facing DUI and manslaughter allegations, as highlighted in the ongoing investigation.

Recorded in San Francisco’s Presidio region around 4 p.m. on April 4, the tragic accident left the cycling world robbed of an exceptional cyclist. On the other hand, 81-year-old Low was suspected to be driving under the influence, elevating the direness of this havoc.

As per reports, the prosecutors alleged that the senior car owner was impaired by alcohol, striking Boyes in a brutal blow when he was pedaling along Arguello Boulevard. With the Masters Track World Champion of cycling succumbing to his injuries shortly after, the U.S. Park Police responded in no time.

Identifying Boyes as a prominent figure holding numerous national titles and strong records in competitive races, locals paid tribute to the saddening loss, while hoping for justice. Recalling his cycling prowess with 10 times national glory, the authorities promised to unveil the truth as quickly as possible, and they even succeeded in doing so.

Months-long investigation coming to an end

While many eyewitness accounts painted a grim picture of the crash, they described Boyes hitting his head against the car’s windshield, with the driver left in a daze. Evidently, once the picture became clearer for the legal teams, they had Low placed in the center of this cycling demise.

At present, he is scheduled for court appearance on December 6, awaiting a conclusion to his drunk-driving and involuntary manslaughter charges. Apparently, if Low gets convicted under his prosecution, he can face up to eight years of penance behind bars, with chances of being fined $250,000. Adding to these parameters, he might also be placed under restitution if needed, as explained by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
