Not many athletes can boast about winning a game or race on their birthday but Sam Welsford is one of the lucky ones who can. He is enjoying a dream start with his new team Bora-Hansgrohe and things are looking nothing but promising. However, the win did not come easily to the man win three stage win, since the entire sprint race was a little messy.

With the final two races of the weekend approaching, every cyclist was keen on leaving their mark and getting a shot at the top. After the race, Welsford spoke to the media at the finish line, and expressed his joy.

He said, “I’ve lost the words, mate. That’s crazy. That was such a fast run and what don’t know or how it would happen, but I just had a good run out of the corner. I wasn’t directly on Danny, but he knew where I was the whole time and I just used the guys in front of me as that lead out.”

The two-time Olympic medallist is confident that he will carry this rich vein of form further into the season and do something special. With his eyes set firmly on the Paris Games, Welsford will make sure to leave no stone unturned to be there.

A birthday that became even more special

The track for Stage 4 was not the smoothest of rides for any cyclist. The 136 kilometre long track from Murray Bridge to Port Elliot finished in a disorderly sprint due to the strong tailwind blowing across from the seaside. None of that however  was enough to stop the Australian cycling juggernaut.
