Toland’s inspirational journey: From tragic to triumph

Jack Toland’s father met a tragic end as he was discovered upstairs, having fallen and passed away. This event inflicted a profound trauma on him. In his own words, he explained the horrific day, “My dad had had a stroke about three months before he died, so he lost all feeling down his left side. I was staying with my parents that Christmas and just after the New Year, I came home about 6 pm, and my dad was upstairs. Usually, we would have heard him getting up if he was going to come downstairs and we would have run to help him come down, but we didn’t know this time that he was out of bed until he heard the thumps on the stairs. We believe he was getting up to go to the toilet, and he slipped and fell down the stairs”
There were days when he had eczema that came in with anxiety and many other stress issues. It was almost the end for him, but at one point, he says his father came into his dream and told him it’s either Do or Die. This is the turning point for Jack as he starts cycling in 2019 and channels all his stress, emotions, and heartbreak into his paddles.

Jack and his wonderful cycling journey
Jack first began to cycling in 2019, then in 2020, he did a ride from his home in Derry to Cork in 32 hours. He did this ride to raise funds, and it gave him a positive mindset to go forward. Jack again did a charity ride in 2021, where he was supporting St Vincent de Paul, Ireland. in 2022 became a pro year for the cyclist as he went on to cover 480 miles in just five days to support autism and raise funds for it. He completed this tough journey in June.
