Imagine your favorite sporting event – it could be the FIFA World Cup, the World Series Playoffs, or any number of competitions. It is a competition that you’ve participated in from the stands or from your home every year for decades. It’s almost a tradition in your house. Now imagine how you would feel if five editions of the competition were suspended. A devastating blow similar to this was dealt to everyone in the cycling community when the Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon was suspended five years ago… but now it’s back!

Yes, you read that right. After 5 long years of being suspended, the Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon is back on October 22! The best cyclists from around the world are really excited to be back after the hiatus and compete against the backdrop of Victoria Harbour.

About The Cyclothon

The Cyclothon will accept applications for participation starting Monday, September 12 for the race. The 50-kilometer race will begin at 5:20 a.m. and will pass through 6 different districts along the way. Riders from the Greater Bay Area have been encouraged to participate in order to boost the relations between Hong Kong and other cities in the GBA. Meanwhile, the 30km competition will enjoy the unmissable sights along the Stonecutters Bridge.

Amid the race schedule and road closures, both categories’ enrollments are capped at 5,200 in total. Meanwhile, participants can register on a first-come first-serve basis. First-time joiners and participants solely from 2017 or before will have to take a free cycling technique assessment on September 16, 17, or 23. Still, they will only have to pay for the standard registration fee to join. Meanwhile, roads will be closed in batches at opportune times so as to not disturb the flow of the city while protecting the cyclists.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTV) is expected to announce more relevant details imminently. The organizing group is intent on using the competition to facilitate the public’s travel plans.

While HKTB is aggressively promoting the Cyclothon, it aims to make Hong Kong  Asia’s event hub This plan includes promoting Hong Kong’s diversified experiences for tourists all over the world to visit and enjoy. The organization also urges participants to make a charitable donation of HK$100 to HK$500 while registering,

Last time around, the Cyclothon raised over HK$1.6 million for charity. The organizing committee has added the windfall to the Community Chest which will be used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The money will also be used to provide primary healthcare services for those who need them.
