Loving your favorite team is so much more gratifying when your team loves you back. It’s heartwarming to think that the days, months, and years spent devotedly following your team and supporting them through wins and losses may get noticed, or better yet, recognized. This is not as common in cricket as we’d like it to be. However, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has made an unusual albeit sweet gesture by helping a superfan and cheerleader, Percy Abeysekara, keep in good health.

SLC has donated an amount of over $60,000 to ensure that the iconic figure in Sri Lankan cricket never falls short of funding. The donation was made to highlight Percy’s immeasurable contribution to the game of cricket in Sri Lanka.

Indian Team Captain Visits Abeysekara

Earlier this month, Indian Cricket team captain Rohit Sharma also paid Percy Abeysekara a visit at his personal residence. The visit took place before India’s match against Pakistan on September 8. Sharma and the team were in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup tournament. This visit was reportedly made upon the request of Sri Lankan fan Gayan Senanayake, who was also present.

As fate would have it, India beat Pakistan in the Super 4 clash to take on Sri Lanka in the final. What was meant to be a riveting game for Asia Cup glory turned into an absolute pummelling. Much to Abeysekara’s dismay, the Indian cricket team made very light work of their opponents and wrote their names into the history books of Asia Cup lore.
