The Malaga School has been cast with a tragic shadow as they grapple with the loss of their beloved teacher, Javier Arias. The 52-year-old, who taught economics at the IES Vicente Espinel (Gaona) passed away on December 10. However, his demise was not under natural circumstances; the incident happened during a climbing endeavor in the Sierra Nevada mountains. 

Arias was known for instilling principles of economics with infectious enthusiasm. The tragic loss of a vibrant educator who shared a passion for climbing has left an irreparable void in the community.

Being an integral part of the school community, the sudden news of Javier Arias’ demise has left the community in shock. The teacher, who was also the father to a 16-year-old girl, suffered a fate that befalls too many. Arias fell about 80 meters to his death while climbing down the Sierra Nevada mountains. The spot where the climb underwent the fall has been confirmed as Tajos de La Virgen, which falls under the Dillar municipality.

In an area that is difficult to access, Arias was accompanied by another climbing companion. It was when the climber and his friend were enjoying their time resting at around 3:30 p.m. on December 10 that the school teacher fell through an area of icy snow. The climber had been in close contact with the community and had left an indelible mark on those around him. As reported by SUR, the management team of the school shared a statement in memory of Arias, He was a beloved teacher, friend and colleague. If he stood out for anything it was for his cheerful spirit.”

Tributes poured in from the students and teachers as they will forever remember the connection that transpired with the teacher beyond textbooks. The authorities unfortunately couldn’t do much to save his life.

Rescue efforts turned out to be futile

A reputed member of the Malaga Trail Running Club for many years, little did Javier Arias know that his climb to the Sierra Nevada mountains would become his last adventure. He had embarked on the climbing journey accompanied by his friend who worked in the same sports organization.

While on their way back from Pico del Cartujo, tragedy struck and his companion alerted 112 Andalucia at around 5:15 p.m. On receiving the call, 061 Health Services and the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) were rushed to the spot. But it was too late. The recovery process witnessed the assistance of eight mountain specialists. The Sierra Nevada Ski Resort also helped with snow plowing equipment.

Arias’ legacy as a teacher and climber will continue to live on forever through the multiple lives he touched. A life well-lived has been cut short posing as a reminder to be extremely cautious while navigating treacherous terrains like that of Sierra Nevada.
