Taking home the county title is no easy feat. A win like that must surely feel like being at the top of the world when you’re a teen in high school. However, for Glen Burnie coach Jami McCoy, the feeling was a lot more comparable to relief than glory. After all, McCoy had taken the Glen Burnie cheerleading from newbies to top-tier talent. In fact, the coach and her team had dedicated 14 years of effort towards the cause. Now, it all seemed to have paid off in a big way.

The team has come a long way, even in the last couple of years. Two years ago, the squad was breaking past their ceiling by winning their first-ever regional championship. Now, they have overcome a 22-year state title drought. The championship also marked a standout moment in McCoy’s 14-year career.

While everyone is aware of Anne Arundel’s cheerleading prowess in the sport of cheerleading in the state, few can even express what a win here means for the students. “I died,” senior All-County select Shane Beckles said. “Regions, states — counties is the scariest competition of all of them. It felt like winning Worlds.” While the stakes are undoubtedly high, keeping your cool is of paramount importance.

Savannah Tasker displayed her winner’s mindset and cool temperament, asking the team to relax and brace themselves for the results. The All-Elite really held it together when her team was huddled up around her. Tasker claimed she had a special feeling when she walked through the door. “I’ve been crying all day. I just had so much faith in us and it feels great to say that I’m a county champ now,” she added, as reported on Glen Burnie Patch.

Once the results were out, the room erupted in chants of “Gopher nation” as the team began to celebrate. When asked how she felt about the victory, McCoy answered: “Overwhelming relief.” She added, “These kids work so hard and they deserve every praise they get.”

Glen Burnie Took the Podium

Glen Burnie defeated Anne Arundel by two whole points, pouring themselves into their performance for the cause. Meanwhile, third-placed Northeast lost out on the second by the finest of margins (0.1 points). Last year’s winner Chesapeake lost out on a podium finish after its team suffered a major error on a stunt. While almost every Anne Arundel team made mistakes while performing, Glen Burnie just took one deduction.

“We go all out every time,” McCoy said. “We don’t ever pretend or mark stuff. Pull out all day, every day,” she added. The victory also seals up an unfinished task for seniors getting ready to leave. Meanwhile, the majority of the team that stays on will have to take up the mantle of champions and come back equally strong next year. During her stint, McCoy never knew whether she would leave Glen Burnie a champion. However, now the team faithful jokingly says to her, “You can leave now.”
