The Dawson County varsity competition cheer team knows this better than most. As they wrapped up their routine at the 29th Tiger Cheer Classic on a crisp Saturday, they were celebrating more than just a victory; they were celebrating the culmination of countless hours of hard work and passion.

In the broader realm of cheerleading, much like any other sport, challenges loom large. One pressing concern is the conspicuous lack of diversity, notably in the participation of African Americans.

A Kansas City resident, Keisha Shannon, has created an extraordinary benchmark for her daughter.

Mom setting up a gym for her daughter

The former cheerleader wanted her daughter to be in the cheerleading department. However, she chose a different way for herself and wanted to pursue gymnastics. This is the time when Keisha thought of supporting her daughter to her fullest and went on to the competitions with her. It was during this time she realized the lack of African Americans in the particular field.

She decides to open a gym for her daughter and for other African Americans to bring in more interest in the field. In her own words, she said, “We took her to a class, and she loved it. I considered her a traitor because she chose gymnastics over cheer. Broke my heart. But I am a helicopter parent. I home-school my kids. I keep my kids with me everywhere. So it was just easy for me to just jump in and be a part of, you know, whatever activity she was doing.”
