Cheerleading as a sport is a big deal in the United States of America. Children practice cheers, and stunts and yearn to join their favorite team’s cheering squad from a very young age. Makenna Huss was no different. An avid follower and passionate cheerleader, she practiced the sport for over 15 years and fell in love with it every day.

But as they say, it only takes one moment to change one’s heart, and that is exactly what happened with Makenna Huss. Although cheerleading will always remain her first love and will hold a special place in her heart, two years ago, she stumbled upon something that changed her life completely. Her curiosity drove her to give acro and tumbling and it was love at first try.

Her sibling’s gymnastics coach Angela Way was the one who pushed her to give the sport a try. She enrolled for private sessions with her and instantly felt at home. It was almost as if she had found her calling, and this was where she belonged all the while.

“I’ve been in cheerleading for 15 years and started acro and tumbling privates about two years ago just to to get an idea about the sport.” “One of my sister’s gymnastics coaches, Angela Way, work with me. She is awesome. She is the one who got me on track for acro and tumbling,” said Huss.

In the day and age where taking cheerleading as a sport and a full-time career is a rewarding option, her decision to switch to acro and tumbling came as a surprise to her family and friends. Daughter of Stacy McDonald and Beamer Huss, Makkenna first gave acro and tumbling competitions a shot during her senior years in Parkersburg South High School.

Acro and Tumbling as sports received a new lease of life at West Virginia State University after it became the 11th intercollegiate sport in January 2022. The two sports are fairly new to the NCAA list of sports and competitions and the excitement is through the roof. With the ball now rolling, Fairmont State University is all set to host the 2024 NCATA National Championship.

West Virginia State has Kaitlyn Miller as their coach, who was part of the Gannon University A&T teams. They were ranked top 5 in the years 2018 and 2019, and her presence as coach will give great encouragement to Makenna Huss, who is ushering into a whole new arena.
