BREAKING: Controversy Strikes Fencing World Championship as They Disqualify Ukrainian Fencer Despite Her Win Against Russian Fencer

Sports are very different from war irrespective of what the situation is between the two nations. It is always expected that on the field players would keep the spirit of the game alive. SPORTS is one place where every diplomatic scenario is kept aside and the game is played artistically.

However, recently, the world situation between Ukraine and Russia played a major role in the fencing championship.

Ukraine athlete denies the handshake with the Russian player

The whole incident took place in the fencing world championship this Thursday. The Ukrainian player Olha Kharlan won the game fair and square against her Russian opponent Anna Smirnova. It was a good moment for an Ukrainian athlete to represent her country in the times of war.

It all went awry when after winning the game, the Ukrainian fencer refused to shake hands with the losing opponent, which is obviously a Russian player. The anonymity of the war and bringing it on the sports field did not seem to be appreciated by the fencing organisation and she was disqualified after this rude behaviour to her opponent.

For some, it may have been a statement point and for some, it was not an appropriate behaviour in terms of sports. The issue was widely discussed on social media platforms.

Ukrainian and the debate about her actions at a fencing game

There were lots of comments after Twitter posted about the incident, and people shared their views.

This comment was meant in support of her actions as the commenter thought, it was good to be the same personality on and off the field, irrespective of what place you belong, but that’s quite debatable.

This comment indicated the participation of Russia in the games and why does the organisation seem to ignore that they are creating a chaotic situation and still getting opportunities. In World Cup 2022, Russia was banned from playing the games in Qatar and people felt that it was a very justified action by the FIFA committee after looking briefly into the world situation. 

It is still not clear if Russia would make peace with Ukraine. However, their recent actions expressed that peace is nowhere near Putin’s head for the following situation.

The fencing championship situation is highly debatable. All in all, it depends on the person and the country that’s suffering. However, a sport needs to be played with utmost enthusiasm and forgetting all that lies beneath the surface, to have a winner in the true sense of the word.
