For any athlete, the early 20s are crucial years for making a name in basketball. The person is at the peak of potential during these times, as the body is ready for any physical endurance.
However, losing an entire career and a life at such an early age is heartbreaking. In a recent incident, a 23-year-old college basketball player passed away. From Houston Cougars to playing for Arkansas, he delivered his best by being the defensive wall for the team. The report of his demise came in on Monday.
End of a budding basketball career at 23

Former Houston basketball player Reggie Chaney, aged 23, tragically passed away, as confirmed in a statement by the university on Monday night. The news of Chaney’s passing has left the Houston community and basketball fans in mourning. University President Renu Khator expressed the collective sadness, saying, “The news has left us with sad and heavy hearts.”
Reggie Chaney played college basketball at two universities, starting at the University of Arkansas and finishing at the University of Houston.
During his time with the Houston Cougars, he emerged as a pivotal contributor coming off the bench. In the previous season, he averaged 3.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, showcasing stellar defensive skills that earned him the title of AAC Sixth Man of the Year.
Chaney’s presence significantly affected the Houston Cougars’ success. Over his three seasons with the team, they achieved two regular-season AAC championships and reached the coveted Final Four in 2021

Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson affectionately referred to Chaney as his “security blanket,” emphasizing the valuable role he played on the team. Sampson shared, “Some days when it’s hot, I may not need you, but if there’s a little bit of a chill in the air, it’s good to know I’ve got that blanket there.“
Reggie Chaney’s former coach at Arkansas, Eric Musselman, also expressed his condolences. He states, “The Razorback men’s basketball family is devastated to hear of the loss of Reggie Chaney. He was a relentless worker and loved by his teammates. His family is in our thoughts and prayers.”
