The nature of sports injuries is quite unpredictable, something the Seattle Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic will be aware of now.
The young left fielder kicked the water cooler in frustration after a disappointing match against the Minnesota Twins, and that proved to be very costly for both himself and his team.

The short outburst of anger left him with a broken bone in his left foot. The Mariner fielder returned from the pitch after a disappointing ninth-inning strikeout and let his emotions and burden of the loss get the better of him. Just 24 hours after the freak incident, the management included his name on the 10-day injured list.
They did not specify the amount of time he will be out of action but expect it to be for an extended period and medical examination showed he will not need surgery.
Speaking to the media after the game, Kelenic was visibly distraught and unable to control his tears as emotions poured over. Talking to the media, he was completely apologetic and was full of regret.
“I made a mistake. I let the emotions get the best of me there. Just feel terrible, especially for the guys,” Kelenic said. “I just let the emotions get the best of me and I just let them down and take full responsibility for it. It’s on me. It just can’t happen.”
“We came up last night with the game on the line, two guys on against arguably the best closer in baseball. I put together a good at-bat, just grinding, and unfortunately I couldn’t come through. And I made a mistake.”

Road to recovery is a long path
Kelenic, 24, was picked sixth overall by the New York Mets in the 2018 draft. He was in the middle of a dream season hitting, .252/.320/.439 with 11 homers and 45 RBIs. Him sitting on the sidelines will be a huge miss for the Mariners. His X-rays revealed a fracture.
“I think it’s a learning lesson for him. For all players,” Mariners manager Servais said to the media. “Players get frustrated when they’re not getting the results they’re looking for. But you’ve got to be able to control your emotions, and that’s part of being a professional. Last night he let it get the best of him and it affects all of us.”

Kelenic is in his third season with the Mariners and showed significant improvement at the plate, especially earlier in the season. The team scratched their heads to decide his replacement before recalling outfielder Cade Marlowe from Triple-A Tacoma and included him in the series finale against the Twins. They won 5-0 and Marlowe went 0 for 3 with a walk on his debut.
