Age is just a mere number and a 101-year-old woman from Baton Rouge has shown why it stands true. In a performance for the ages, a woman set the world record for 100m in the 100+ category at the National Senior Games in Birmingham in 2017.

Julia Hawkins, today 107 years old, completed the race 6 years ago in just over 40 seconds, adding another feather to her cap.

The National Senior Games started in 1987 as a venue for older competitive athletes. Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins, as she is fondly called, has been an avid cyclist and decided to begin her running journey at the young age of 100. According to wbrz.com, she completed the race with a total time of 40.12 seconds, in addition to her previous record of 39.62 in a different category.

I knew I could do it because I’m in the yard a lot and I keep hearing the phone and come running in to get it,” Hawkins said after the race.

At 101, Hawkins was the oldest athlete to be associated with the USA Track and Field history. She started her track events voyage in 2016, participating in State Olympics and National Senior Olympics. She won gold medals in the 50m and 100m dash categories, starting off her career with a bang!

Secret to longevity

Hawkins reflected on the doubts people had and the questions they asked, stating that she felt better than ever and her age does not bother her at all. The secret to her long life was, she said that she rides her bicycle and ran 100m dashes every day but the real ingredients are exercising, diet, and family.

I tell people the thing I recommend is to marry a good man. If you marry to a man for 70 years and have four wonderful children and then you have great grandchildren,” Hawkins said. “You can’t ask much more than that …so that’s what I’m blessed with.

“Hurricane Hawkins” still stands strong, and she competed in the 2021 edition aged 105, still strong and young as ever! Her undying spirit and will to power on is a testament to what sheer passion can do and the heights it can take for a person. A truly astounding feat and the world must watch and learn from a woman who never understood what giving up meant.
