Hiking Canine Companion in Critical Condition: Swift Response Yields Hopeful Outcome
At 1:00 p.m., WCSART became aware of a canine emergency near Turtle Back Arch off Rock Bridge Road. The distressed dog was suffering from an inability to walk and swelling on its back legs, signaling a grave condition. The rescue team sprang into action, employing a Stokes basket to reach the dog and its owners, who had carried the incapacitated animal for nearly a mile on their own. A team member, well-versed as a Vet Tech, administered Benadryl to the ailing dog before the evacuation commenced.

Upon evaluation, they discovered that the canine, named “Sasha,” had endured five copperhead snake bites on its back quarters. The dedicated owners’ quick response and the team’s intervention contributed to Sasha’s chances of recovery.
They then transported Sasha to a veterinary hospital in Lexington, receiving anti-venom treatments. Although in pain, Sasha’s prognosis was hopeful, providing relief to both the family and the rescue team.
